Confession: I didn’t really Participate in my high school retreat days.

It’s not that they weren’t engaging - they were. The facilitators were enthusiastic, the activities were meaningful, and there was plenty going on. The truth is, I was just shy. I often sat back, listened, and kept my thoughts to myself. From the outside, it probably looked like I wasn’t getting much out of the experience at all.

But years later, I can still remember those retreat days.

I remember the stories that were shared. I remember the moments of reflection. I remember the questions that stayed with me long after the day had finished. Even though I wasn’t the student putting my hand up or speaking in front of the group, something was happening beneath the surface.

Those experiences have shaped the way I approach retreat facilitation today.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you never fully know what’s going on for a student during a retreat. Sometimes a student will take a big risk and step up in front of their peers. Sometimes they'll ask a thoughtful question that shifts the direction of a conversation. Or, their participation is far less visible - a note scribbled down during a reflection activity, a conversation with a friend as they walk out the school gate, or simply the willingness to sit with a challenging idea.

Yes, it’s awesome when every student actively participates in the day, yet meaningful growth can look very different from one student to the next, and sometimes the most significant moments are the ones that happen quietly, beneath the surface.

My name is Adam and as a Retreat Facilitator my aim is to create a foundational experience where students feel welcomed, challenged, encouraged, and invited to reflect. I want to offer a positive experience of faith and spirituality that meets students where they are at - but doesn’t just leave them there.

If this sounds like something that could benefit your students, I'd love to chat. Feel free to explore the programs below and get in touch.

HEARTS OF COURAGE (leadership)

Hearts of Courage is an immersive, high-energy leadership retreat that challenges students to step out of their comfort zones, make brave choices, and see them through - even when fear is present. Moving away from a "badge or title" mentality, students explore leadership as a dynamic, selfless act of listening and responding to the cares, hopes, and beliefs of those around them. With carefully selected activities, input, and a ritual, this program aims to empower each student to bring their best selves to their leadership year.

Stronger together (leadership EXTENSION)

Stronger Together is a leadership consolidation day designed to deepen and expand the foundations established during the Hearts of Courage retreat (though it can be used separately). Transitioning from individual actions to collective impact, students discover that they can achieve great outcomes when leading as a united front. Through shared experiences of games and challenges, students unpack two crucial pillars of team leadership: courage and empathy. United together, the students can step into their final year of primary school as an empathetic, collaborative, and transformative leadership team.

FINISH STRONG (END OF YR 6 RETREAT)

Finish Strong frames the primary school journey as a collective race, encouraging Year 6 students to cross the finish line with gratitude, perseverance, and mutual support. Moving away from a competitive mindset, students celebrate the peers, educators, and family who have run alongside them. The program creates space for students to claim the internal strengths they will carry into high school. The aim of this program is to enable student to honour their past and step into secondary school with confidence

STORIES WITH MEANING (IDENTITY & BELONGING)

This retreat offers a space for students to explore personal identity, foster authentic belonging, and discover a deeper sense of purpose. The program invites students to reflect on the experiences that shape who they are and clarify the core values that guide their decisions. Rather than viewing life's unexpected challenges as disruptions, students are encouraged to reframe obstacles as components of personal growth and resilience. Ultimately, the experience aims to inspire students to intentionally contribute their unique strengths to a broader, shared community.

IMPACT WITH INTENT (Leadership OR sOCIAL JUSTICE)

Servant Leadership has long been associated with Jesus’ leadership style. But Jesus did more than serve. Jesus upheld people's dignity, challenged political and religious systems and ultimately, set a new path to freedom and forgiveness. Jesus was (and is) transformative. This retreat leads students through an exploration of Transformative Leadership, a style of leadership they can utilise to create immediate impact. Through this program, students will be empowered to act as catalysts for positive change within their school and community.

Life WITH REASON (MEANING AND PURPOSE)

Throughout their final years of school, students are met with questions about their future pathway - what are they going to do? This retreat approaches identity and purpose from the angle of "being" rather than "doing". This program walks students through a series of approaches to their future: a life of purpose, a life to the full, a life of truth. Drawing on data, research and the Catholic Tradition, this retreat presents a compelling vision for life, meaning and purpose.

About ME

I have more than 15 years of experience in youth ministry, having dedicated much of my professional life to accompanying and supporting young people in their faith, personal growth, and leadership development.

My experience as a Retreat Facilitator includes stints with NET Ministries Australia, Project Hatch, and Marist Youth Ministry. I’ve also worked with Vocation Brisbane, ACU Campus Ministry and Mercy Community in various ministry roles.

But enough of the serious stuff! Here's a collection of completely random facts about me…

I chose my favourite sports team (the Los Angeles Lakers) based on my favourite colour (yellow) when I was 8 and have followed them ever since. I prefer the window seat to the aisle. Pineapple belongs on pizza. I get nostalgic when going to the Tip. My pet peeve is when people use “apart of” when they actually mean “a part of”. I like fonts. I carry residual guilt over the passing of my childhood pets (hermit crabs). I frequently walk into rooms with great confidence and no clear objective. I know more than one story of a saint who was kidnapped by pirates. Macs are better than PCs. I have never outgrown the feeling that libraries are magical. I find elevators socially awkward. I love uncovering obscure stories from history and finding the life lessons hidden inside them.
